After graduating from NYU's School of Journalism my mind was set on staying close to the written word, and because of my love of books and reading, publishing came as the easy answer.
When I started my career, I had no idea that I would end up in sales. But my love for independent bookstores drew me there. I loved visiting them, talking to the booksellers, and ultimately making many friends with owners, bookstore managers, event managers,
and store clerks.
My dream of one day owning a bookstore, changed once I got into publishing.
Working in sales, and concentrating my efforts in the indie marketplace, I came to realize and appreciate that I could be of great help to the independent bookstores from the position I held inside the publishing house. The dream morphed into doing everything I could in my career to help the bookselling community thrive and become a vital part of the success of our books and authors.
I worked at Hachette Book Group (in its various incarnations) for 36+ years. I began my career as a Marketing Assistant and rose within the ranks of the sales department to VP, Director of Field Sales, and Account Marketing for all of its imprints:
Grand Central Publishing, Basic Books Group, Hachette Audio, Hachette Books, Hachette Nashville, Little, Brown and Company, Little Brown Books for Young Readers, Orbit, Running Press Group, and Workman Publishing. I was honored to have received the Literary Marketplace Award for Excellence in Sales/Marketing and to have been chosen as a Publishers Weekly 2023 Notable Person of the Year and I was featured in their January 2024 issue.
Everything I did in my career was aimed at selling books, but there was always a special place in my heart for the indies. I worked on the
original launch of BINC.
I’ve served on the boards of the New England Independent Booksellers Association, and New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association.
And I am currently serving as a trustee of the Professional Bookseller School.
I have forged rock-solid relationships with booksellers all over the country...some relationships spanning generations and multiple owners at various bookstores.
I am honored to have been part of many Hachette Book Group bestsellers. During my career, I had the honor of working with the following special authors, writers, musicians, personalities:
Jane Goodall, Nelson DeMille, Sandra Brown,
Jon Stewart, Madonna, Robert Waller, JK Rowling, James Patterson, David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, Preston and Childs, Emma Donoghue, Jack Welch, Brad Meltzer, Ayad Aktar,
Joshua Ferris, Kitty Kelly, David Sedaris,
Anita Shreve, Michael Moore, Pete Hamill,
Malcolm Gladwell, Sally Fields, Rick Moody,
Nick Sparks, Stephan Colbert, Alice Sebold,
Keith Richards, JoAnn Beard, Kate Atkinson,
Min Jin Lee, George Pelecanos, Maria Semple, Edna O'Brien, Jane Hamilton, Elin Hilderbrand, Luis Urrea, Jewell Parker Rhodes,
Stephanie Meyer, Ljeoma Oluo, Sally Mann, Clarence Clemons, Ted Turner, Uwem Akpan, Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes,

“When I told Karen that I felt foolish for taking such a long time to write novels, she said to me, ’Never rush your book. You take the time you need.’ Karen Torres believed in my work and understood the way I work. She hand-sold my books to independent booksellers who trusted her, too.”

Karen Torres: The Legend
It’s not an exaggeration to say that you nurtured my career from zero to hero. How can I ever thank you for the ways you worked your magic with independent stores across the country. You will always be a hero of mine.
Elin Hilderbrand
From my first days at Little, Brown and Company, you have always been there for me, Karen. Always thinking about how to build my sales and career, always pushing my books out front and center. I hope you take credit and pride in getting Harry, and Mickey, and Renee to the top of the charts. You have earned both. Many thanks to you.
Michael Connelly
All those years ago when we met, I found a friend for life. From that first day, you were my mentor and a constant advocate for Book Passage.
You introduced me to people in Hachette and even other houses who helped me because of you. When I have a problem, a question, or an idea, you are the first person I call. As the publishing world changed, you stood by me. I have always counted on you to give me a straightforward answer and to help me find the best path forward.
You think of ways you can help grow Book Passage that I never would have imagined, let alone suggested.
Many of the highest-profile authors have become aware of Book Passage because of you.
Elaine Petrocelli
Book Passage Owner
Your insight, wisdom, straight-up honesty, and directness are the qualities I admire and respect regardless of my place in the industry. While consulting at Underground Books in Sacramento, you were one of the few people I could reach out to who understood and respected the plight of a black-owned nonprofit bookshop, and the perspective you offered at that time still benefits them.
Thank you for the many books you put in my hand over the years that you were correct in knowing I would love.
Calvin Crosby (he, him)
Co-Owner | The Kings English Bookshop
You are a champion of independent bookstores everywhere and I loved the years we worked together. The partnership always began with perimeters and exciting possibilities that inspired me and my staff and enabled us to have successful events for Hachette, the author, the audience and the store.
Whether it was a store goal to sell 100s of copies of a book single title or an event I appreciated your clear and concise explanation of will an event be successful.
In short, your expectations elevated us, and we were goal oriented. This created excitement beyond just selling books because it was fun working with you.

Thank you for everything you've done for me these past five years. In addition to all your
help, you've always shot me straight, and that's incredibly rare not just in this business,
but in life in general. I greatly appreciate and enjoy all of our conversations.

Karen is very frank and straightforward. I embraced all that she had to teach me, which was invaluable and on-going. She shares her wisdom, her observations, her interpretations, all to help me do my job better and to prepare me for what I might encounter. She does it kindly and truthfully and well-intentionally. Her vast and personal experience with publishers, authors, and booksellers gives her a unique perspective. Her heart and soul want the best for all those involved in the world of books. I respect her opinion, cherish her laugh, and appreciate her friendship.
